Indonesian for Expats in Bali, the Course Built Around Your Daily Life
Most Indonesian courses are designed for tourists. This one is not. If you live in Bali, you have different needs: dealing with your landlord about the water bill, talking to immigration, managing staff respectfully, understanding your kids’ school, and having a real conversation with your neighbour rather than just smiling and waving. Every lesson in this course is anchored to a real expat situation in Bali.
What You Learn
- Housing: negotiating rent, repairs, water and electricity, internet setup
- Health: clinics and hospitals, describing symptoms, prescriptions, insurance
- Banking and admin: opening accounts, KITAS and visa renewals, sending money home
- Family: school communication, hiring and managing help clearly and respectfully
- Daily life: polite bargaining, reading a Tokopedia order, ceremony etiquette, and why iya sometimes means no
Cultural Fluency, Not Just Vocabulary
Half of settling into Bali is reading situations correctly. Direct refusal is impolite, maybe later can mean no thank you, and compliments work in unexpected ways. We weave this into every class, so by month three you are not just speaking Indonesian, you are reading the room. For the broader relocation picture, see our expat guide to moving to Bali.
Formats and Pace
Private classes at home in Canggu, Pererenan, Ubud, Uluwatu, or Sanur, small groups, or online. Most expats are conversational by month three at twice a week, or in half that time on the one-month intensive. Levels follow the A1 to C2 path on our syllabus. See rates on the pricelist.
Frequently Asked Questions
How is this different from the regular course?
The grammar foundation is the same. The vocabulary, role plays, and cultural lessons are built around life as a resident, not a tourist.
Can my partner and I take classes together?
Yes, couples often take private classes together. The shared practice at home speeds up progress for both.
